What to Wear

Newborns and babies
Newborns and babies photograph best in their skin!  I will bring along wraps, hats and other props for them.  If you have any outfits or clothing items that you want them to be photographed in let me know.
Children
The possibilities are endless!  Anything with texture will photograph well. Denim, wool, cable knit, ruffles, and layers are all good examples.  Try to avoid big plaid, stripes, floral designs, big characters, or logos, as we want the clothing to add to the cuteness of your child’s face, and not distract from it.  Avoiding current fads is always a good idea as well – classic clothing will help keep your photos from appearing dated.  Bare feet are always a favorite (who can resist little tootsies?), but cute shoes and boots can work well too. If you have any suggestions, or requests I will try my best to help you out.
Family
Try to dress the family in coordinating tones and colors for the best results.  Avoid bright magenta or solid reds if you can, as they reflect a very pink light onto skin and surroundings.  Think about the environment we’ll be shooting in and dress appropriately for the weather, keeping in mind that classic clothing generally shows the best in photographs.  Don’t be afraid to put a little personality into the clothing!

Before the session

  • Make sure your child/children are well fed and rested.
  • Cut and clean their nails on their hands and feet.
  • Wash faces really well, paying close attention to ensure that the little noses are really clean, as the camera will pick up all the little details our eyes may overlook.
  • Try to avoid feeding your child orange vegetables starting the day before the session, as it may leave an orange tint around the mouth that is hard to get off.
  • Talk to your kids about the session, and fill them in on all the fun they will be having! Try to avoid practicing smiling, as I am looking to capture natural expression.
  • If the session is on a location other than your home, pack a little bag to bring along to the session.

Some things to include

  • Snacks and drinks (Try to avoid anything that may get them dirty or stained.)
  • Tissues
  • Wipes
  • Favorite toy/blanky/pacifier (if you feel your child may need to take a break with it)
  • Change of clothes

During the your session

I will need your help, but allow me to lead the way. Try to avoid calling your child’s name to have them look my way, or telling them to smile. Please try to avoid telling your child what he/she may not do, (unless it is harmful to the child) as I really want the mood to be positive and upbeat in order to get the best expressions and experience possible. I may tell you to hide from the child’s view for short periods of time if we feel he/she will interact better with me and my camera that way.

Enjoy watching moments being captured for a lifetime!
